MERV and air filtration for home HVAC systems

Learn how MERV relates to particle capture, airflow resistance, and a home's HVAC system.

What MERV measures

MERV is a rating used for ducted particle filters. It describes filter performance in a standardized test, so it can help compare filters within that test method.

EPA explains that the rating covers several particle-size ranges. A rating is useful information, but it does not by itself show whether a particular filter will fit a system or maintain the airflow that system needs.

Particle capture and airflow resistance

Higher-efficiency filters can capture smaller particles. They can also add airflow resistance. EPA says resistance generally, but not necessarily, increases as MERV increases for filters of the same thickness.

That tradeoff is why a filter choice belongs in a whole-system review. The filter cabinet, return-air path, blower, duct system, and the filter's condition all affect how a system moves air.

System fit comes before a universal recommendation

There is no single MERV rating that is right for every home. A homeowner's particle concerns matter, and so does whether the installed equipment can accommodate the filter without restricting airflow.

When changing filter media or thickness, ask a technician to review the actual filter location and the system it serves. The goal is a filter that fits the home's needs and lets the HVAC system operate as intended.

A filter needs regular attention

A filter cannot perform as intended if it is left in place beyond the manufacturer's service guidance. Check the filter's condition, use the specified replacement size, and bring persistent airflow or comfort changes to a technician.

UV and filtration

Standard filters trap large particles. Upgraded MERV-rated filters capture smaller particles like pollen and dander. Air purifiers remove particles and some gases. A UV lamp mounted at the indoor coil keeps mold and bacteria from growing on the wet coil and drain pan, which keeps the coil cleaner and helps it transfer heat. In a double-blind office trial, coil UV cut microbes on the treated surfaces by 99 percent and workers reported fewer respiratory and mucosal symptoms. UV does not clean the moving air in a typical home system and does not remove pollen or dust mite allergens, so it works alongside filtration, not instead of it. Often a combination works best.
